I Didn’t Know that About Duplicate Content

I’ve heard about duplicate content…and how you don’t want to have it of course, but I never really knew EXACTLY what they meant by that. I had always just assumed that it meant that if you post something on your website, that you don’t want to post it somewhere else as well.

It turns out that I was wrong! I just read a really interesting article from Sharyn Sheldon called “The Truth about Duplicate Content” and I’m really glad I did.

Duplicate content is when you have the same exact content on more than one place ON YOUR WEBSITE! So if you post an article on your website, and then somewhere else, it isn’t duplicate content.

But…

Since the search engines are only going to show search results for ONE of the articles if they are exactly the same…yours probably won’t be the one that it chooses. It’ll be the one that has more authority.

At that point, you may say…”Well then why would I ever post my article somewhere else, if people will be directed towards the other site?” Well, this is why…

People who are reading your article on other sites that have more authority than yours trust those places! So when they see your article there, they “transfer” some of that authority to you and think more highly of you.
